Periscope Basics

What is Periscope?

"Explore the world through someone else's eyes" is the idea behind this free app. You can download the app for your Apple product or Android. You can also watch Periscope broadcasts on your computer!

Here are the various links:
Periscope at the Apple app store
Periscope on Google Play
Periscope.tv for computers

I found it to be an amazing platform to connect with like minded homeschoolers, especially families living the Brave Writer Lifestyle! There is a great Facebook group named BraveScopes for exactly these families. I have recently joined and now enjoy creating little challenges for the group.

Things to know once you have uploaded the free app:

Login through twitter or use your cell phone number

Follow people! Follow me if you like at lifeonisland! On the app you can search for people by first choosing the people icon on the bottom right of the screen, then the little magnifying glass on the top left. Type the person's name, for example lifeonisland, and tap on add icon once you find the person!

*for the computer users, add a forward slash and name of broadcaster*

You can watch live periscopes or replays for 24 hours after the live event. After that, you can find most broadcasts on katch.me. I can be found there.

The advantage of watching live is the ability to interact with the broadcaster by leaving comments. The person doing the broadcast can read these and answer questions or comment back.

While watching, you can also give hearts by tapping the screen. Hearts are similar to "likes"! It is a wonderful to see all the hearts as a broadcaster!

Check it out, give periscope a try! Find some interesting people to follow, Julie from Brave Writer is an excellent Periscope broadcaster. I highly recommend following her if you are a homeschooler! Find her by searching bravewriter.

  2. but what's the advantage? That's what I can't figure. it seems just a way to do a live blog post but with live feedback which could be REALLY distracting. so what's the advantage for me the average Jane blogger? Is it just that people like video?

I dislike video as a blog post because then I am stuck on the blogger's time... as opposed to a written post where I can quickly skim a post to see if I really want to read it or not.

So help me think this through. :)
