Celeste and I are studying the ancient Maya civilization in history and I picked up "The Discovery of the Americas" at our local library for extra reading. She liked it very much, and chose it to share with you for Book Sharing Monday.
"Many thousands of years ago, the world was a very different place. During the last Ice Age, a natural bridge formed between the land mass we call Asia and what is now North America. "
Betsy and Giulio Maestro share the story of the "The Discovery of the Americas" from the prehistoric time to Magellan. Here is the description from the book jacket:
"Every October, Americans celebrate the discovery of their country by Christopher Columbus. But 'The Great Navigator" wasn't the first to find this new world. Stone Age explorers crossed the land bridge from Asia to North America. Chinese seafarers may well have discovered the western shores of South America long before the Vikings anchored in the chilly waters of Greenland. And all of them came hundreds of years before Columbus."
This book was published in early 90s so I am not sure how easy it will be to locate and might miss some more up to date historical information but it was very interesting to read aloud to Celeste.
Another interesting and also fun book we enjoyed this week, related to the theme of explorers was one I found at our local thrift store. It is "Explor-a-Maze: Experience the Thrills of Discovery as You Solve Each Explorer's Maze" written by Robert Snedden and illustrated by nine different artists.
This book is a collection of ten mazes that "lets you take on the role of explorer and share in the adventure of discovering new worlds." Each of the ten explorers featured has two double pages, on the first one is a quick intro and instruction on how to do the maze along with the maze itself, then on the second double page you can read more about the explorer. The solution to the maze is also found on these biography pages.
This is a book we will be going back to many times. Celeste likes to do a maze or two each time, along with reading some of the biography. Little bits at a time for this one!

I have one to share this time! :) http://plouffes.blogspot.ca/2014/04/april-2014-favourite-read-aloud-roundup.html That first book especially looks fascinating! I may have to check it out for myself.
ReplyDeleteThese look awesome. I love full colour books that kids can learn just by looking at. My boys are so much more likely to stare at pictures than read all the words. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteThat book looks so colourful! History doesn't have to be dull ;-)
ReplyDeleteLooks like a great book. Perfect timing too - I'm about to start planning a Mayan unit for the Fall to coincide with a family trip to Belize. Thank you!
