Geography, Science, Math + Field Trips ~ Week Two

Our second week was busy! We are waiting for some of our curriculum/resources to arrive but we still got a lot done.

We also went on two great field trips with the homeschool group and I attended my first local homeschool moms meeting. You can see more of our field trips on this post: Two Field Trips on One Day!

The meeting was great, well attended with twenty-five moms there.  I miss my Ontario homeschool moms terribly, but it was nice to make new connections. Lots of laughter and ideas for activities were shared. I was really interested in finding out what activities were regularly planned because I think it will be very different homeschooling only one child. Celeste loves being connected with people and I think she will need these social activities to continue being happy at home. Fun swims, ice skating, days at the park and nature walks are all possible activities in our future.

For the learning part this week, we concentrated on Math, Science and Geography.
Celeste loves her Teaching Textbooks Math. She continues to do very well with it and on Monday she completed 2 lessons and 1 quizz in one setting. The rest of the week was "just" one lesson a day!

We continued our study of weather changes with Science. We finished our lab work on temperature changes and made a rain gauge that we will use over this weekend since rain is in the forecast. I read several books aloud, some from the great series "Let's Read and Find Out Science", in particular "Down Comes the Rain" and "What Will the Weather Be?". If you are not familiar with the series, I would encourage you to check them out at your local library.  Their covers and titles might look to be targeted to very young children, but the books are filled with great information. We also read "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs" for fun!

We started Geography. I am using the Trail Guide to World Geography. I have used this curriculum over several years since it includes different levels. This year, Celeste and I are going through the primary level (2nd/3rd grades).

The first week introduced geography terms, the globe, and world maps. The geography terms gave her an opportunity to learn how to use a dictionary. She found the terms, chose which definitions and copied them in her notebook.

I showed Celeste how to colour and label maps with a continents map. We did the first map together. She told me she really likes doing that, just like her big sister!

We made paper mache earth, moon and sun. We only planned on making earth, but Celeste wanted to make the other two as well, because she recalled an episode of Max and Ruby she had seen years ago! I had bought the e-book Geography Through Art a couple of years ago, and pull some of the activities at times that tie in with the lessons and that I think my kids will enjoy. This time I thought Celeste would love getting messy with the paper mache, and I was right! She loved it.

How was your week? October is almost here! I am looking forward to more fall colours and temperatures. I will be organizing a simple nature hike very soon, so I am hoping for sunshine, hopefully this coming week!
