NaNoWriMo's Young Writers Program & Workbooks

NaNoWriMo is almost here! If you are not familiar with this event, NaNoWriMo stands for National Novel Writing Month of 50,000 words during the month of November. I have participated three times and won twice. My two older kids participated in 2008 and 2010, they won in 2010. The kids can set the word count to a more achievable goal. You can read our NaNoWriMo-related posts here

This year, Celeste will be participating! I still haven't decided if I will or not. I am leaning towards no, and instead making sure that she is comfortable with the challenge. She isn't fluently writing on her own yet, so I will either need to write her story for her or she will dictate it in the ipod and then I will type it for her. I love challenges though, so I might just decide at the last minute to go for it for myself too!

The Young Writers Program has free downloadable workbooks divided into three levels: elementary, middle school, and high school. This year, you can write in them on your screen. We won't have to print every page! I remember Adrienne using her workbook a lot to get herself and her ideas organized the first year she participated in NaNoWriMo.

You can set the word count in the Young Writes Program to suit your own child. I set Celeste's at 2,500 words.

I am not sure if Celeste will enjoy this challenge or not. Adrienne and Andre didn't like the idea of it at first, but I remember asking them to "just do it". They did and ended up enjoying themselves in the process. They would talk about their novels all the time! They went from balking at anything to do with writing stories to writing their own long novels. I don't expect that Celeste will be the same, but hopefully the experience will be a good one. We won't know unless we try!

Let me know if you and/or your children are doing NaNoWriMo this year by leaving me a comment!

  1. Hi Alex - so lovely to meet another Island blogger! I've heard of the NaNoWriMo challenge but I've never tried it. I hope that Celeste really enjoys it! All the best!
