Poetry Tea Time

Before the holidays, I came across a review of Brave Writer, which sounds like a perfect match for myself and Celeste. This post isn't about this writing resource. At this time, we can't afford to change or purchase it. I still wanted to read more about it, so I visited the site and spent some time reading the descriptions of the program. I spent some time visiting Julie Bogart's blog. I discovered an area called "Brave Writer Lifestyle". It was as if I had found a treasure chest filled with inspiration!

One idea that really stood out was the Poetry Tea Time. Right away I knew that Celeste would enjoy it. At the time, she didn't like tea but when I introduced the idea, we both agreed we could have a cold drink instead. Since then, we have been introduced to David's Tea. Celeste is in love with their Cocomint Cream tea.

Over the holidays, we drank lots of tea but didn't do the "Poetry Tea Time". Finally this week, the routine has come back and today we enjoyed our first Poetry Tea Time together.

It was a very simple tea time.

Celeste and I both agreed that we need to fancy it up a bit more! We had steeped loose tea and Celeste had a mandarin. We need cookies or a cake next time.  We did enjoy the poetry we read, and that is important. Celeste and I are still on the discovery road trying to find what she enjoys in books, stories, and poetry.

The three books we read from today were:

Zoo Doings: Animal Poems by Jack Prelutsky ~ a winner, I read aloud every single poem of this small book.

The 20th Century Children's Poetry Treasury selected by Jack Prelutsky ~ I only read one double page from this book. I think that the layout was too busy and not appealing to either of us.

Fancy Nancy Tea Parties by Jane O'Connor ~ anything Fancy Nancy Celeste loves, so I thought this would be a fun book to read during our first Tea Time. It was!

I am not sure how often we will do our Poetry Tea Time, but I am planning for at least once a week. I will write about our books and any special treats as often as I can.

If you are interested, I created a "Poetry & Tea Time" board on Pinterest.

  2. This sounds like so much fun. Fancy Nancy is popular here too. Even with little brother. He thinks Nancy is just crazy. ;-)

  3. What a great idea! I was very surprised when I checked out Shel Silverstein's Where the Sidewalk Ends (his big book of poems) and my 5 year old son (at the time) just loved it! I think there something about rhyme that is just pleasing to young children's ears in particular. Glad the two of you had fun. Thanks for linking into the Kid Lit Blog Hop. Cheers! :)
