Peaceful Bedtime Books :: Book Sharing Monday

We chose a few peaceful bedtime themed books to read aloud at the end of our poetry tea time last week. We loved each one so much, we wanted to share them with you for Book Sharing Monday.

Celeste would like to share The Sea of Sleep by Warren Hanson and illustrated by Jim LaMarche is the story of a baby otter rocking gently to sleep in her mother's arms, on the sea. The words and the art are both so relaxing and peaceful, I could imagine this book to be a wonderful bedtime story.

"The sea of sleep is blue tonight.
Blue and beautiful.
A deep, deep blue-blue borrowed from the sky,
With brilliant crystals winking on her fingertips.
These gentle jewels
Light our voyage home across the night."

I have two books I would like to share with you today:

All the Awake Animals Are Almost Asleep by Crescent Dragonwagon and illustrated by David McPhail is a bedtime poem and an alphabet book combined. The story starts with a young child that is not sleepy and his mom. She tells him the story of the awake animals getting sleepy, going through the alphabet, one animal for each letter.

"An alphabet of ways to sleep,
of ways to rest and ways to keep
a stillness, quiet through the dark,
without a chirp or roar or bark."

Once Upon a Northern Night by Jean E. Pendziwol with pictures by Isabelle Arsenault is a lyrical poem filled with the beauty of cold winter nights, with animals and the quiet nature of the night.

"Once upon a northern night,
deep,
deep,
in the darkest hours,
the snowy clouds crept away
and stars appeared -
twinkling points of light
hanging in the purple sky."
