An afternoon with homeschool friends, and a few farm animals too!

We spent most of yesterday at a homeschool family's hobby farm. We had been invited along with another family for lunch and just plain fun. With a total of nine kids and three moms, it was a great fun-filled day.

The kids ages ranged from almost two years old to 15 years old. One of the moms commented on how everyone got along so well. I have noticed over our almost nine years of homeschooling that it is common to see different ages interact very well in a homeschool community. Teenagers don't mind playing with an eight year old. Homeschool children don't seem to pay attention to grade levels, that has been my observation.

The moms spent most of the afternoon talking about many different things. It is so important for homeschool moms to be able to connect with other homeschool moms. Sharing ideas, resources found, accomplishments or struggles.

This homeschool family has a barn with several farm animals. Andre and I spent some time with them while the son of the family introduced us to each one. There were also chickens and rabbits, not represented in these photos.

The Jersey cow, Rose, seemed to connect with Andre right away. It might have something to do with him rubbing her neck or maybe she liked his coast because she kept licking it! As soon as he walked away from her, she would moo loudly. To us, it sounded like she was calling him back. She was really sweet.

Rose shares her living space with a black sheep. He was looking for some attention too...

Two black Berkshire pigs also live in the barn. They "talked" to us too!

I really loved hearing all these farm animals and watching their interaction with us. You could tell they were used to having humans around and for me, as a vegetarian, it was nice to see them being raised like this. Even if some are raised for meat, at least they are having a comfortable life first.

  1. Lovely! It reminds me of when I was growing up, homeschooled, on a little hobby farm like this. We had a cow, goats, chickens, geese, sheep, pigs, guinea fowl, cats and dogs (though not all at the same time). It was a wonderful experience for a child. I almost feel bad for not doing it for my children...almost. :)

  3. Ok. #1 - i love that pig. He's so cute!
#2 - I have to concur with your observations about homeschool kid interactions. It feels more like "oh - hey - there's a kid who I can play with" as opposed to who is cool and in my class.

    What a fun day. :)
