The Ravenous Gown and 14 More Tales about Real Beauty ~ Book Review

The Ravenous Gown and 14 More Tales about Real Beauty is written by Steffani Raff. It is a collection of short stories about beauty and strength from within.

As I read each story aloud to Celeste, we named it our new favourite! We both truly enjoy this collection of tales. Each tale had a twist on a known fairy tale or was a brand new story imagined by the author. Each story had an empowering and important message.

The back of the book mentions that "The Ravenous Gown captures the essence of a stronger, smarter princess - the kind that actually lives happily ever after." I think these tales could be enjoyed by boys just as much!

Each tale is covered in the discussion guide, found at the end of the book. Each short story has interesting questions, some have a "just for fun" note, and/or a "story" note. I always enjoy reading about how the author comes up with a story.

Here is a little bit more about two of our very top favourite tale:

The Princess Who Could Fly is the tale of a princess in search of her personal gift. She discovers that she can fly and every day after lunch she loves to fly for fun, looking over her kingdom from the sky. Soon she is working with the people of her kingdom, listening to their problems, and trying to help them. She uses her gift in trying to help her citizens, by showing them their world from a different point of view. Her people think she is extraordinary and full of wisdom.

Moonstones and Magic is so full of beauty of character that it is my personal favourite. Catherine, a young girl at the start of the story, receives a moonstone necklace from her father. She believes the legend that she might see her future on a full moon's night by placing the moonstone under her tongue. She tries but doesn't see anything. Instead, she meets an intriguing woman in her dream who asks her if she would rather have "joy and contentment in youth and misery in old age" or the opposite. Catherine chooses to be happy in old age. The story follows her through her life, through all the hardships she endures....Will her story turn around, as she asks herself "how long is youth?"?

The Ravenous Gown is truly a beautiful collection of stories by an author that is a master story-teller!
