Unseen City: the Majesty of Pigeons, the Discreet Charm of Snails & Other Wonders of the Urban Wilderness is written by Nathanael Johnson. With this book, we can learn more about urban nature, animals, plants, and trees that we could encounter almost everyday if we live in a North American urban setting. The inspiration for this book came from his desire to teach his young daughter the name of the trees they saw during their walks in San Francisco.
I truly loved this book! I completely agree with the author and believe that we can find nature wherever we are. I am inspired by this book to continue to observe the fauna and flora in my urban environment. From the early introduction where Nathanael shares his discoveries of nature in his urban environment to his practical recommendations for other neighborhood naturalists, he has a great writing style that is a joy to read. The book then takes us on an adventure of discovery. We learn more about the pigeon, squirrel, and turkey vulture. The ant, crow, and snail chapters were my favourite. The author shares information that was fascinating, and even more important, his own thoughts from observing nature.
