In Our Garden :: Garden Flowers Nature Study

Orange Emperor Tulip

This month's focus for nature study is "garden flowers". What perfect timing! Our Journey North tulips just opened up a few days ago, and other little flowers are popping up here and there. I need to keep better track of what we plant so I can recognize what comes up!

We noticed these little flowers in our front yard garden and didn't know what they were at first. We looked in our guide and discovered they were Grape Hyacinths, also known as Muscari. We didn't plant these here, so since we have only been here since last June, we think maybe the last owner had planted them.

Last year we planted a small Phlox plant and it is beautiful this year! It looks brighter at different times of the day. I took the first photo early in the morning, the second one later in the evening; and a few days apart. I love the simple shape of the five petal Phlox flower.

We started our garden flower nature study by simply observing the flowers in our own garden. We have read the little Pocket Nature book on flowers, and a lovely book from the library called "The Flower Alphabet Book" by Jerry Pallotta. We used the Wildflowers Peterson Field Guide to identify the Hyacinth, we haven't used the colouring book yet.

Check out the Handbook of Nature Study blog for more info on this month's nature study focus! This post is linked to the Outdoor Hour Challenge Carnival.
